Calling All State Games Alumni for Statewide Torch Run
MERIDIAN, MS — In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the State Games of Mississippi, all former State Games participants are invited to help cheer at the running of the official torch in various locations across Mississippi.
“We are 25 years strong in bringing the best Olympic-style sports competition to amateur athletes in our state,” said Krilecia Gianakos, director of marketing and development. “This year the flame of competition will travel across Mississippi before arriving in Meridian June 17, where it will be used to light the official State Games cauldron.”
The State Games of Mississippi is a statewide sports fest for amateur athletes featuring 37 sports in May and June, more than 5,000 amateur athletes and an Opening Ceremonies complete with a parade of athletes and more.
Former State Games participants have many chances to watch the torch run across the state. The 2016 State Games Torch Run begins in Starkville May 24 at 11 a.m. at City Hall and continues throughout the state at the following locations:
May 25 – Tupelo (Fair Park/Elvis Statue) at 11 a.m.
May 26 – Oxford (Southern Pipe & Supply) at 10 a.m.
June 1 – Greenwood (County Court House/Downtown) at 10 a.m.
June 2 – Jackson (MS Sports Hall of Fame Museum), 10 a.m.
June 11 – Natchez (Gazebo on the Bluff) at 9 a.m.
June 14 – Mississippi Gulf Coast (Gulfport - Southern Pipe & Supply), morning
June 15 – Hattiesburg (Southern Pipe & Supply), 9 a.m.
June 15 – Laurel (Southern Pipe & Supply), 11 a.m.
June 16 – Choctaw, morning
